New CFR 1907 Cluj coach Sorin Cârţu praised his side for a "precious victory" after kicking off his tenure with a 2-1 win against FC Basel 1893 in UEFA Champions League Group E. His opposite number Thorsten Fink admitted he was "very disappointed" by a performance and result he had not anticipated.
Sorin Cârţu, CFR coach
I had confidence in my boys and I told them before the match we could win. Basel are a very strong and well organised team and know how to win the ball and keep possession. That's why our victory is so precious. I made several changes to the starting XI, because I had a certain feeling about this match and you can be sure that in the future, depending on the match and the opponent, there will be other changes as well. But for now I want to enjoy this very important victory.
Thorsten Fink, Basel coach
We expected things to be quite different. I am very disappointed. At the beginning we lacked fight and were too far away from our opponents. We gave the ball away too many times. Our play improved, but we had few clear chances. We were better than Cluj in every area, but they were very efficient, good in defence and battled brilliantly. We can still finish third in the group, but we have not increased our chances.
