Cypriot champions AC Omonia have clinched their first major signing of the summer after luring Congolese international striker Lomana LuaLua to Nicosia.
LuaLua, 29, has penned a two-year deal as Omonia bid to become the third successive Cypriot side to reach the UEFA Champions League group stage. "I have an excellent working relationship with [coach] Takis Lemonis and we experienced some amazing times together," said LuaLua, who played under Lemonis at Olympiacos FC in 2007/08. "I cannot wait to start work here."
Over a thousand fans were at Larnaca airport on Sunday night to welcome the former Newcastle United FC man, who was a free agent after Olympiacos opted not to renew terms. He joins Serbian goalkeeper Dragoslav Jevrić, Spaniards José Manuel Rueda, Iago Bouzón Amoedo and Víctor Espasandín, and Israeli defender Yuval Shpungin at the club. Omonia begin their UEFA Champions League campaign against FK Renova in the second qualifying round on 13 July.
