AC Milan have given goalkeeper Christian Abbiati a two-year contract extension until June 2013 as he prepares to compete to be first choice in the coming season.
Abbiati, 33, rejoined Milan in 2008 after three years of loan spells to Juventus, Torino FC and Club Atlético de Madrid, having had a spell as regular No1 before Dida's emergence in 2002. The former AC Monza Brianza 1912 goalkeeper missed the start of last season after a long-term knee injury but recovered to make 11 appearances, helping Milan to third place in Serie A and a 2010/11 UEFA Champions League group-stage berth. The departure of Dida and Marco Storari's move to Juventus means that Abbiati and on-loan Genoa CFC keeper Marco Amelia are competing to be new coach Massimilano Allegri's first choice.
