FC Girondins de Bordeaux will be without Fernando for Wednesday's UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg against Olympique Lyonnais after the midfielder fractured a cheekbone during Saturday's 2-1 home defeat against AS Nancy-Lorraine.
The 28-year-old, who sustained the injury in a collision with Nancy's Alfred N'Diaye, has been a key figure for Bordeaux this season and has played in all nine of their UEFA Champions League matches en route to the last eight. He is now likely to be out for the rest of the season.
"More scans will take place in the next four or five days to assess how long he will be unavailable," a club statement read. Jaroslav Plašil is likely to deputise for Fernando as Bordeaux look to recover from a 3-1 deficit against Lyon in Wednesday's return at the Stade Chaban-Delmas.
