FC Bayern München captain Mark van Bommel has extended his contract with the Bundesliga pacesetters by a year until the summer of 2011.

The 32-year-old Dutch international has quashed all questions about his future by signing the new deal for next season – and immediately underlined his ambitions for the Bavarian club.

"I want success with this team and to win trophies," Van Bommel said. "That is our current goal and the one for next year, and if we achieve it we will talk again."

The 32-year-old former Fortuna Sittard and PSV Eindhoven midfielder arrived in Munich from FC Barcelona in August 2006, going on to play 103 Bundesliga games. His uncompromising attitude quickly established him as a leader and he succeeded Oliver Kahn as captain in August 2008.

"Mark has been an important and consistent guarantee of success over the past few years, but especially in the last few months," Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said. "He is a very good captain and representative for Bayern."

Bayern top the Bundesliga and are in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League after knocking out ACF Fiorentina last week. Van Bommel scored in Florence, getting Bayern back into the game after they had fallen 2-0 behind. They eventually lost 3-2 on the night but advanced on away goals following their 2-1 win in Germany.
