Mourinho out to turn tables on Chelsea

During his three seasons in charge of Chelsea FC, José Mourinho was unable to lead them to the UEFA Champions League title and as coach of FC Internazionale Milano he is now aiming to end his former side's hopes of realising their dream.

• The tie also holds great resonance for Mourinho's opposite number, Carlo Ancelotti, who makes a swift return to the city where for eight years he held the reins at Inter's fierce rivals AC Milan, twice guiding the Rossoneri to UEFA Champions League glory.

Previous meetings
• Although this is the first time the clubs have met in UEFA competition they did lock horns last summer in a pre-season friendly in the United States. Chelsea won 2-0 thanks to goals from Didier Drogba and a Frank Lampard penalty.

Match background
• Inter have lost in the first knockout round in the last three seasons, being eliminated by English opposition for the last two years. The Italian champions lost 2-0 on aggregate to Manchester United FC in 2008/09, the first leg in Milan ending goalless.

• That stalemate continued the Italian side's poor home run against English visitors, Arsenal FC winning 5-1 at San Siro in the 2003/04 group stage before Liverpool FC's 1-0 triumph that completed a 3-0 aggregate success in the 2007/08 first knockout round. Inter have lost four of their last five matches against English sides, home and away.

• Chelsea visited Italy twice last season, losing 3-1 at AS Roma in the group stage before a 2-2 draw at Juventus in the first knockout round completed a 3-2 aggregate win.

• In knockout contests against Serie A sides Chelsea have two triumphs from two ties but have won only once in six visits to Italy, a 4-0 group-stage success at S.S. Lazio in 2003/04. The London side's only previous visit to San Siro ended in a 1-1 draw against Milan in the 1999/2000 first group stage.

• That campaign was the first time Chelsea had reached the last eight of the competition although they have competed in the semi-finals in four of the last five seasons. Only once (2007/08) have they made it to the final with two of their semi-final defeats coming during Mourinho's tenure – in 2005 and 2007, Liverpool their conquerors each time.

• Mourinho's Inter won only two games in finishing second in Group F, two points behind FC Barcelona. Just one of those came in San Siro, against FC Rubin Kazan.

• Chelsea topped Group D with 14 points, remaining unbeaten and winning twice on their travels, against APOEL FC and eventual runners-up FC Porto. Since a 2-1 defeat at Fenerbahçe SK in the 2007/08 quarter-final first leg Chelsea have played ten away games – not including their defeat on penalties in the 2008 final in Moscow against Manchester United FC – drawing six with three wins and just that one defeat, at Roma.

Team ties
• While in charge of Milan, Ancelotti won ten of 18 competitive games against Inter, losing five. Two of the three draws were in the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League semi-final, Milan progressing on away goals after drawing 1-1 in Inter's home leg and going on to lift the trophy to give Ancelotti his first UEFA Champions League crown as a coach.

• Ancelotti got the better of Mourinho in the 2003 UEFA Super Cup when Milan beat Porto 1-0. Honours were even when the pair went head to head in Serie A last season, Milan and Inter each winning their home game.

• Ancelotti scored against Inter in a 4-3 home win for Roma on 12 May 1985.

• Samuel Eto'o and Juliano Belletti scored the Barcelona goals which enabled them to come from behind to beat Ashley Cole's Arsenal 2-1 in the 2006 UEFA Champions League final.

• In last season's semi-finals, Eto'o helped Barça overcome Chelsea on away goals after a 1-1 aggregate draw.

• Ricardo Quaresma played on loan for Chelsea in 2009 but made only one starting appearance.

• Ricardo Carvalho and Deco won the UEFA Cup in 2003 and the UEFA Champions League a year later at Porto under Mourinho. José Bosingwa was also a member of the 2004 squad.

• Thiago Motta and Eto'o were team-mates of Deco and Belletti at Barcelona.

• Marco Materazzi scored in the 2006 FIFA World Cup final for Italy as they defeated France on penalties. Chelsea's Florent Malouda was fouled by Materazzi for the penalty which gave France an early lead.

• Didier Drogba scored for Marseille in a 1-0 home win against Inter in the 2004 UEFA Cup quarter-finals. Francesco Toldo, Iván Córdoba and Javier Zanetti all featured over the two legs for the Nerazzurri.

• Sulley Muntari spent 2007/08 with Portsmouth FC, helping them lift the FA Cup. He played in the 1-0 league defeat at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea and is a team-mate of Michael Essien for Ghana.

• Branislav Ivanović and Dejan Stanković play together for Serbia.

• John Terry, Lampard and Joe Cole all played for England in a 3-2 friendly victory against Argentina in November 2005. Inter trio Zanetti, Walter Samuel and Esteban Cambiasso appeared for their opponents.
