• Real Madrid CF originally played their home games at the Chamartín Stadium yet, upon being elected in 1943, ambitious club president Santiago Bernabéu set about building a prestigious new, larger arena just to the west of it.
• Work on the new ground, named after the president, began in October 1944 and three years later, on 14 December 1947, it was inaugurated with a match between the Spanish giants and Portuguese side CF Os Belenenses.
• Originally limited to just three stands, a fourth was built seven years later and, during big European nights of the 1950s, capacity often surpassed 120,000, although that has been reduced by subsequent renovations.
• The Bernabéu underwent significant changes ahead of the 1982 FIFA World Cup finals, when a canopy was built to cover three of the four stands ahead of the tournament. There has been more building work at the ground over the years, with four towers added to grant access to the top tiers in the early 1990s.
• The stadium has hosted European Champion Clubs' Cup finals in 1957, 1969 and 1980, as well as the finals of the 1964 UEFA European Championship and the 1982 World Cup.
