Jesús Navas's new year's resolution

Jesús Navas has developed into a key figure at Sevilla FC. The 24-year-old winger has earned the confidence of coach Manuel Jiménez and made his senior Spain debut against Argentina in November. Riding high in the Liga and in contention for UEFA Champions League and Copa del Rey titles, Sevilla are on course to finish the season among the trophies. Jesús Navas has high hopes himself, and describes them to uefa.com.

uefa.com: What are your thoughts on the team's performance in the group stage?

Jesús Navas: We played really well in all the matches but obviously the first three group games stand out. We won them and conceded only two goals in the process. All in all it was a generally good group stage for us and we must continue that form in the next round.

uefa.com: Can this Sevilla team emulate the UEFA Cup successes of 2006 and 2007 in this season's UEFA Champions League?

Jesús Navas: We're taking things step by step; we really believe in that approach. The most important thing is to remain calm and focused. Game by game is the way to go and then we can do great things.

uefa.com: If you reach the final at the Santiago Bernabéu in May who would you like to face?

Jesús Navas: It would be a massive achievement to get there and be on the greatest stage which is what the UEFA Champions League final is. But let's not get ahead of ourselves; before thinking about possible opponents we have to concentrate on what we are doing, to be as effective as we can. There's still so much to go through before that date rolls around.

uefa.com: What is it about the Sevilla youth system that produces so many young players? At the moment, for example, the likes of Cala and José Carlos are ones to watch.

Jesús Navas: From the very first moment a hard work ethic is instilled in the players; the guys you mentioned are doing what they should be doing at this stage of their careers. Sevilla gives opportunities to its youth-team players, and the youngsters know they must take advantage of those chances when they come around. They realise they have to give their all to be at the right level when they come in.

uefa.com: What was it like to make your international debut?

Jesús Navas: It was tremendous, the absolute best. I instantly knew it was a feeling I wanted to enjoy again and again.

uefa.com: Do you see yourself featuring at the forthcoming FIFA World Cup?

Jesús Navas: I'm going to do everything in my power in order to be there and the best way I can achieve that is by working my socks off here at Sevilla, giving 100 per cent time after time. By doing that I'll have a chance of going to South Africa.

uefa.com: You were nominated for uefa.com's Team of the Year. What does this type of recognition mean to you?

Jesús Navas: It's beautiful to be recognised in that way and being included in the list is an extremely positive sign. When you discover things like that it is a powerful motivator and encourages you to continue working hard to achieve positive things.

uefa.com: You have a contract until 2012 and there is talk of a renewal in the near future. Will Jesús Navas be with Sevilla for a long time to come?

Jesús Navas: I'm extremely happy in Seville. Both myself and the club are satisfied at the moment. If one day in the future I go somewhere either in Spain or abroad it won't be me who makes that decision. I'm content with life at Sevilla.

uefa.com: If you had to make a wish for 2010 and were forced to choose between Sevilla and the Spanish national team when making your choice, what would that wish be?

Jesús Navas: I want everything. Being in the Spanish team and winning something on that front would be marvellous. But I certainly want to win something with Sevilla. If I could do both that would be great.
