Triple-centurion Terry wants top spot

John Terry will captain Chelsea FC for the 300th time at the Estádio do Dragão and he knows how he wants to mark the occasion – with a victory over FC Porto that would guarantee first place in Group D.

Good form
Both Chelsea and Porto are already through to the UEFA Champions League knockout stages but the visitors have a one-point advantage in the race to make sure of top spot and a home second leg in the first knockout round with victory. Chelsea have been on superb form recently, scoring 14 unanswered goals in a run of four league wins despite injuries that have kept Frank Lampard and José Bosingwa from this trip, while Michael Ballack, Deco and Didier Drogba have also had their problems.

Ambition
"The 300th game as a skipper is something of which I'm very proud of, it's a big achievement for me," said Terry, before turning to the matter in hand. "It's always nice to be first: many good sides could be runners-up, but we want to be first. We've had really good starts in both [Premier League and UEFA Champions League], but no one is getting carried away. There is a lot of competition inside the squad and that's healthy because now that we have some injuries, the players stepping up are ready to do a good job."

Hulk threat
Chelsea were made to work to beat Porto 1-0 in their opening fixture, and Terry is concerned with an attacker he watched make his international debut in Brazil's recent friendly victory over England in Doha. "Hulk is a very difficult player, very good," the defender said. "I saw him play for Brazil, he can dribble, he can score goals, he is a very nice player – this game is going to be very hard to win."

Ancelotti tribute
Terry was appointed captain in July 2004 by José Mourinho and is now holding the role under a fifth manager, Carlo Ancelotti. "I am happy because John Terry is a very good captain, not only for his technical qualities but also his professionalism and I hope that he will be the captain for a long time," the Italian said.
