Goals on menu for Barcelona and Bayern

If the form book is any guide, then there should be no shortage of goals when FC Barcelona and FC Bayern München meet in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final at the Camp Nou.

• These two former champions are the joint-highest scorers in this season's competition with 24 goals each from eight games. In Barcelona's case they have also conceded the most goals of any of the last-eight participants – eleven – and have still to keep a clean sheet on home soil.

• That statistic should offer hope to German titleholders Bayern as they look to improve on a recent record of three consecutive defeats at this stage of the UEFA Champions League – in 2002, 2005 and 2007.

• Bayern can point to three wins in four previous meetings with Barcelona but the Spanish club, semi-finalists last term, boast an impressive run of form against German opposition having won ten and drawn one of their last eleven matches against sides from the Bundesliga.

• Barcelona advanced to the quarter-finals with a 6-3 aggregate victory over Olympique Lyonnais in the first knockout round (1-1 away, 5-2 at home). Josep Guardiola's team had earlier topped Group C with a record of W4 D1 L1.

• Bayern are one of three unbeaten sides left in the competition alongside Liverpool FC and Manchester United FC. They progressed from the last 16 in emphatic fashion after crushing Sporting Clube de Portugal 12-1 on aggregate (5-0 away, 7-1 at home). Prior to that they had finished first in Group F with a record of W4 D2 L0.

• Coaches Guardiola and Jürgen Klinsmann were both in action when Barcelona and Bayern met for the first time in the semi-finals of the 1995/96 UEFA Cup. The teams drew 2-2 in Munich before Bayern – with Klinsmann again present, but Guardiola absent – advanced to the final with a 2-1 success at the Camp Nou. Carlos Busquets, father of Barcelona midfielder Sérgio, featured in goal for the Azulgrana in both legs.

• The clubs' next encounters came in the 1998/99 UEFA Champions League group stage when Bayern recorded home and away victories, 1-0 in Germany and 2-1 in Spain. At the Camp Nou, Bayern came from a goal behind to win through second-half strikes from Alexander Zickler and Hasan Salihamidžić.

• Guardiola and Klinsmann were also on opposing sides as players when Barcelona beat the German's AS Monaco FC team both at home (2-0) and away (1-0) in the group stage of the 1993/94 UEFA Champions League.

• Later that same season they came face to face in the first round of the 1994 FIFA World Cup where Klinsmann's equalising goal earned Germany a 1-1 draw against Guardiola's Spain in Chicago.

• Barcelona's overall record against German clubs is: W25 D9 L11.

• Their home record against German clubs is: W15 D1 L5.

• Barcelona overcame opposition from the Bundesliga at this stage last term, recording 1-0 victories both at home and away against FC Schalke 04.

• Barcelona lifted the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1979 after a 4-3 final triumph against TSV Fortuna Düsseldorf. They have twice won the UEFA Super Cup, meanwhile, by beating German sides: overcoming Werder Bremen 3-2 on aggregate in 1992/93 and BV Borussia Dortmund 3-1 in 1997/98.

• Bayern's record away to Spanish clubs is: W4 D4 L8.

• Counting their 2001 UEFA Champions League final draw with Valencia CF as a victory, Bayern's overall record against Spanish clubs is: W17 D9 L9.

• Bayern defeated Valencia 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the 2001 final. It was their second European Champion Clubs' Cup triumph at the expense of opposition from Spain. In 1974 they outlasted Club Atlético de Madrid 4-0 in a replay after another 1-1 draw.

• Bayern's most recent meeting with a Spanish team proved rich in drama. After a 1-1 first-leg draw in Munich in last season's UEFA Cup quarter-final against Getafe CF, they fought back in spectacular fashion to earn a 3-3 draw in the return on 10 April – and, with it, an away-goals victory.

• After Franck Ribéry's 89th-minute equaliser had forced extra time at 1-1, the drama levels kept rising as the Spanish side went 3-1 in front in the additional period only for Luca Toni to score after 115 and 120 minutes to secure an improbable triumph.

• Bayern have won just one of their last nine matches against Spanish sides, suffering five defeats.

• Barcelona's record in European Cup quarter-finals is: P10 W8 L2.

• This is Bayern's 21st European Cup quarter-final – more than any other team left in the competition and a total surpassed only by Real Madrid CF's 27. Bayern's record is P20 W12 L8.

• The Bundesliga champions lost their two previous European Cup quarter-finals against Spanish opposition, suffering defeats at the hands of Real Madrid in the 2001/02 (2-3 agg) and 1988 (3-4 agg) campaigns.

• Barcelona's Andrés Iniesta, Xavi Hernández and Carles Puyol were in the Spain side that won the final of UEFA EURO 2008™ against a Germany team including Bayern's Miroslav Klose, Philipp Lahm, Lukas Podolski and Bastian Schweinsteiger.

• Bayern forward Ribéry registered for France in a 3-1 win over a Spain side that included Puyol and Xavi in the last 16 of the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

• Bayern midfielder Tim Borowski scored a penalty at the Camp Nou for Werder Bremen but finished on the losing side in a 3-1 defeat in the group stage in 2005/06. He and striker Klose were also in the Bremen team whose hopes of progress from the group stage the following season ended with a 2-0 loss to Barcelona in December 2006.
