FC Internazionale Milano v Manchester United FC
The holders renew acquaintances with Inter coach José Mourinho, whose FC Porto side eliminated United at this stage in 2004 and who enjoyed a fine record against Sir Alex Ferguson while in charge at Chelsea FC, tasting defeat only once in ten meetings. United, however, will be full of confidence after eleven successive wins.

• While United are now aiming for a third consecutive quarter-final appearance, Inter are out to make amends for defeats at this stage in 2006/07 and 2007/08.

• Inter striker Zlatan Ibrahimović has never scored a goal in European competition after Christmas.

• United equalled the longest unbeaten run in UEFA Champions League history on Matchday 6 with a 2-2 draw against AaB having gone 19 matches without defeat.

Real Madrid CF v Liverpool FC

When the draw was made Madrid's patchy autumn form prompted five-time winners Liverpool to be installed as many people's favourites to triumph in a repeat of the 1981 final. Since then, the nine-time European champions have won nine successive Liga matches, though they have gone out at this stage in each of the last four seasons.

• Rafael Benítez spent seven years as a player in Madrid's youth and reserve teams and started his coaching career at the club in 1986, rising to take charge of Castilla – the club's B team – and also having an eleven-game spell assisting then caretaker boss Vicente del Bosque with the first team in 1993/94.

• Fernando Torres did not win a single game against Madrid while at Club Atlético de Madrid, scoring just once in nine appearances.

• Raúl González has scored four goals in his last two Liga appearances and six in his last five.

Olympique Lyonnais v FC Barcelona

The top scorers in the competition with 18 goals and runaway Liga leaders, Barcelona have won all three of their away matches in the competition this season yet have taken just one point from their past two league games, presenting a glimmer of hope to a Lyon side hoping to reach the last eight for the first time since 2005/06.

• Coaches Josep Guardiola and Claude Puel were in opposition as players in the 1993/94 group stage and it was the former who came out on top as Barcelona won both home (2-0) and away (1-0) against AS Monaco FC.

• Lyon have failed to beat Barcelona in four previous attempts, losing three but twice fighting back from a goal down to earn a 2-2 home draw in last season's group stage.

• Barça have never beaten French opponents over two legs, losing ties to OGC Nice, FC Metz and Paris Saint-Germain FC in the past.

Chelsea FC v Juventus
Former Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri returns to Stamford Bridge at the helm of a Juve side who have lost their last six away matches in the knockout stages. The London club are unbeaten at home in 15 European fixtures and Juve's two most recent UEFA Champions League campaigns were both ended by English opposition.

• Chelsea won all three of their games at Stamford Bridge in the group stage.

• Juve have lost on their last five appearances in England against local clubs and have only been successful in two of the 16 away contests.

• Juventus scored seven goals in the group stage, fewer than any other side in the first knockout round.

Sporting Clube de Portugal v FC Bayern München

In the knockout stages for the first time, Sporting have not beaten German opposition in 14 attempts and face a formidable task against a Bayern side who have won eleven of their 20 matches against Portuguese Liga sides, including a 1-0 triumph at the Estádio José Alvalade in the 2006/07 group stage.

• Bayern's sole defeat against Portuguese opposition came with a 2-1 loss to Porto in the 1986/87 European Cup final.

• Bastian Schweinsteiger scored the only goal of Bayern's last trip to Sporting on 18 October 2006, but was later sent off.

• With five goals in the group stage, Miroslav Klose is the joint-highest scorer in the competition along with Lionel Messi, Steven Gerrard and Karim Benzema.

Match background/match facts

Arsenal FC v AS Roma

Roma lost to Manchester United in the quarter-finals in 2007 and 2008 and face a tough first leg against an Arsenal side unbeaten in 22 home matches in the competition, although the visitors can take heart from the hosts' stuttering domestic form which has brought five draws in their last six matches.

• Roma have suffered five consecutive defeats on English soil over the past four seasons.

• Overall, the Giallorossi have registered just one win and eight reverses in 12 matches in England, although they did emerge with a 1-1 draw from their one previous visit to north London to face Arsenal in the second group stage of the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League.

• Arsenal have won five of their six previous two-legged encounters against Serie A sides, including last season's 2-0 aggregate triumph against AC Milan at this stage of the UEFA Champions League.

Match background/match facts

Club Atlético de Madrid v FC Porto
Atlético will take comfort from a home European Cup record which includes 19 wins and only three defeats but have won only once in 2009, while Porto have lost just one of their last four visits to Spain, although their eight preceding trips to tackle Liga opposition ended in defeat.

• Atlético's most recent UEFA Champions League campaign, in 1996/97, ended in defeat in the first round after the group stage when after a 1-1 draw away to AFC Ajax in the quarter-finals, they went down 3-2 at home after extra time.

• Porto's most recent visit to Spain was a 1-0 victory at RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League semi-finals second leg en route to a second European title.

• Atlético have three former Porto players in their ranks: Giourkas Seitaridis, Paulo Assunção and Maniche, the latter part of the side which claimed the UEFA Champions League crown in 2004 and UEFA Cup victory the previous season.

Villarreal CF v Panathinaikos FC

Another side defending an impressive home record, Villarreal have recorded five wins and five draws at El Madrigal in the European Cup, and have won both their previous games against Greek opposition. Panathinaikos, however, were victorious in their last three Group B games including triumphs at Werder Bremen and Inter, but have lost on each of their nine visits to Spain.

• Prior to their success at Bremen on Matchday 4, Panathinaikos had not won an away game in the UEFA Champions League since December 2003.

• The Greek team's last involvement in a knockout tie in Europe's premier club competition resulted in defeat at the hands of a Spanish side with Barcelona winning 3-2 on aggregate in the 2001/02 quarter-finals.

• Panathinaikos committed 115 fouls in the group stage, the highest total among the teams in the first knockout round.
