Goncharenko vows to bring BATE back

FC BATE Borisov coach Viktor Goncharenko paid credit to his team's ability to stand shoulder to shoulder with Europe's élite after holding Juventus to a second draw in what has been a memorable maiden campaign in the UEFA Champions League. He is already looking forward to next year, when he hopes the newly-crowned Belarussian champions can go even further, something Juventus counterpart Claudio Ranieri can empathise with. Having topped Group C he insists Juve do not have to "fear anyone in the first knockout round".

I'm really satisfied with what my players did on the pitch tonight and throughout the group phase. Even if we finished bottom of the group we always played on the same level as the other clubs, despite our lack of experience. Juventus are a great team, but just like in our first match against them we have come away with a point having created several chances, especially in the second half. Playing in the Champions League is really important for us, because it's the only way to meet Europe's best teams and improve our consistency and self-esteem. Being part of the group phase has been an honour and we hope to be here again next season when, hopefully, we can reach the knockout phase of the competition.

We achieved our main objective: first place in the group and also avoided any injuries ahead of our match against [AC] Milan [on Sunday]. We tried to win the match, creating a lot of chances, but unfortunately we lacked accuracy in front of the goal. BATE are a difficult team to play against; they were good in Belarus and tonight it was the same. They play at pace and have a good passing game so we had to choose our moments carefully before committing men in attack. We finished first in a tough group and have no reason to fear anyone in the first knockout round. At this level all the teams are good teams and we'll have to play at our best to continue our European adventure. I'm also satisfied with Cristiano Zanetti's performance. Ha has been out since May and despite struggling in the first half, he was back to his best after the break – more good news for us.
