AS Roma coach Luciano Spalletti singled goalscorer Matteo Brighi for special mention, but had praise for his entire side after a "very intelligent and mature" performance in a 2-0 win sealed top spot in Group A. FC Girondins de Bordeaux coach Laurent Blanc believed Roma's greater experience ultimately told, but was disappointed his side had not packed a greater punch in attack.
Luciano Spalletti, Roma coach
I'm satisfied because we were very intelligent and mature tonight. We were able to wait without risking anything and earned what is a very important result for us, for the fans and for the club. The whole team had a great game but Matteo Brighi was surely among the best, helping his team-mates throughout the match. Without players like him everything becomes more difficult, even for players with more class.
Bordeaux wanted to keep the score at 0-0 for as long as possible and there is always danger lurking round the corner in this kind of situation. When we were in crisis earlier this season I could only stay calm and wait for the team to return to its best. I know this group very well and how good my players are. In the past few years we finished second in the group stage and we won our Round of 16 tie so it doesn't really matter which team we face in the next round.
Laurent Blanc, Bordeaux coach
We did not play well in the final third. As we expected, Rome let us control possession, but it's always the same with Italian teams; you think you have the upper hand but at the end the score is always the same. We failed to threaten them. We knew we had to defend well, but we were naive, and Italian sides immediately punish you for that. Roma have more experience at this level and we could see it on the pitch tonight. However, we finished just behind two big teams, Roma and Chelsea, and I cannot say that's such a bad result.
