First place at stake at Stade de Gerland

The main issues have been decided in Group F with Olympique Lyonnais and FC Bayern München both securing their passage to the UEFA Champions League knockout stages with victories on 25 November. Now the pair, both unbeaten after five games, go head to head at Stade de Gerland to sort out who finishes top of the section.

• On Matchday 5 Lyon clinched their place in the next phase for a sixth consecutive season when a stirring display from Karim Benzema gave them a 2-1 victory in Italy against ACF Fiorentina. The French champions established a two-goal lead by the 27th minute with Benzema setting up Jean II Makoun to score from close range before drilling in the second himself. Alberto Gilardino pulled one back just before the break with a fine header but that was the extent of Fiorentina's reply.

• On the same night Bayern followed Lyon into the last 16 for their fifth successive UEFA Champions League campaign with a comfortable 3-0 victory at home to FC Steaua Bucureşti. All the goals came in the second half, a pair for Miroslav Klose strikes arriving either side of a Luca Toni header.

• A win or a goalless stalemate on Matchday 6 would be enough for Lyon to claim the prize of top spot in the section, but an away victory or any score draw would put Bayern through as Group F winners.

• When the sides met on 30 September at the Fußball Arena München a 1-1 draw ensued with the Bundesliga titleholders forced to come from behind as midfielder Martín Dimichelis inadvertently flicked Juninho Pernambucano's long-range free-kick into his own net. The hosts responded after the break, Zé Roberto heading in to secure a draw.

• Before that Bayern had got their 12th UEFA Champions League campaign off to a winning start when an early header from Daniel Van Buyten settled the contest away to Steaua. Lyon, meanwhile, could only pick up one point and the home side were grateful for that because after 72 minutes they trailed 2-0 to Fiorentina, Gilardino putting away two headers at either end of the first half for the Viola. The hosts rallied, though, Frédéric Piquionne and Benzema striking to prevent defeat.

• Lyon's other home games in the section included a 2-0 success over Steaua with Juninho's free-kick and a late strike from Anthony Réveillère making the difference. In a remarkable contest two weeks previously, Arthuro and Dorin Goian had given the Bucharest side a dream start against the French champions with two goals inside the opening eleven minutes. Lyon levelled through Benzema and Kader Keita and, although Ovidiu Petre headed Steaua back in front, another Benzema strike and two goals from Fred in the second half secured the points for the Ligue 1 side and hastened the departure of Steaua coach Marius Lăcătuş.

• Bayern's two games with Fiorentina first brought them a 3-0 home victory as Toni, the Italian side's former striker, set up first-half goals for Klose and Bastian Schweinsteiger. Zé Roberto curled in a delightful third late on for his second goal of the campaign.

• In the return fixture on 5 November, Cesare Prandelli's team led through Adrian Mutu's eleventh-minute volley. However Bayern struck back with 12 minutes remaining when Tim Borowski put away a low drive.

• The last meeting between the sides before Matchday 2 came in the 2003/04 group stage when a 1-1 draw ensued at Stade de Gerland while the return two weeks later brought Lyon a 2-1 away win. In France, the home team required an 88th-minute header from Péguy Luyindula to rescue a share of the spoils. Bayern had led through a Roy Makaay goal midway through the first half.

• The sides also met in the 2000/01 second group stage when Lyon ran out 3-0 winners at home. It was Bayern's last defeat on French soil – the three subsequent meetings yielding a win and two draws – and despite the loss they went on to win the competition that season. Overall Lyon have won six and drawn one of their nine home meetings with sides from Germany. The last two games have resulted in resounding victories, 4-2 against VfB Stuttgart in last season's group stage and 7-2 against Werder Bremen in the 2004/05 first knockout round.

• Bayern's most important win against French opponents came in the 1976 final of the European Champion Clubs' Cup when they got the better of Lyon's local rivals AS Saint-Etienne 1-0 at Hampden Park. The previous season they had defeated the same team 2-0 at home after a 0-0 draw away in the semi-final to book their place in the showpiece for the second season running, going on to successfully defend the trophy.

• Bayern's French duo of Willy Sagnol and Franck Ribéry will be in opposition to international team-mates and Lyon squad members François Clerc, Jean-Alain Boumsong, Benzema, Sidney Govou and Jérémy Toulalan.

• The section's other Matchday 6 fixture pits Steaua against Fiorentina.

• The draw for the UEFA Champions League first knockout round will take place at 12.00CET on Friday 19 December at UEFA's headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. Group winners will be paired against runners-up from different sections with the second-placed teams playing the first leg at home. Clubs from the same associations cannot be drawn together.
