FC Girondins de Bordeaux coach Laurent Blanc praised his side's desire and determination after they defeated CFR 1907 Cluj 1-0 in a tense match at the Stade Chaban-Delmas to keep their hopes of qualifying from Group A alive. CFR Cluj coach Maurizio Trombetta believed his side deserved a point, but stressed that the Romanian champions still hold on to second spot in the section, a point ahead of Bordeaux, going into the rematch between the teams on 4 November.

Laurent Blanc, Bordeaux coach
I'm very pleased with this result. We didn't concede a goal and that makes things so much easier. We deserved to win tonight and that's why I'm pleased. You can always improve your game later. Cluj have been a surprise but after their results [against AS Roma and Chelsea FC], we were prepared. If you are good enough to win in Rome then you're a good team. We had to battle and we did. We had to be strong and we were. Now we are in contention. We can keep on hoping and we're still alive in this group. Even though Chelsea are the best team and will finish first, the other three all have something to play for. We had no choice. We had to win and we did.

Maurizio Trombetta, Cluj coach
We lost for the first time in the competition but they didn't score, it was an own goal. I think it should have been a draw which would have been a better reflection of the game. But I want to congratulate my players, they played well. We had a few problems in the first half but afterwards we improved and had opportunities to score. I'm more pleased with our second-half performance and it is important to stress that we are still in second place. I think the group is balanced. We have one point more than Bordeaux, who we play again in our next game. They are closer to us now so we have to win at home to keep our advantage.
