Jürgen Klinsmann may not have been overwhelmed by the nature of FC Bayern München's 1-0 win at FC Steaua Bucureşti, but he knows all too well that "in the end it's the result that matters" in a testing Group F which also includes Olympique Lyonnais and ACF Fiorentina. His Steaua counterpart Marius Lăcătuş felt a draw would have been a fair result, and will be looking for an improvement in future assignments.
Marius Lăcătuş, Steaua coach
I'm a little bit disappointed. I had hoped to use the speed of some of our quicker players on the counterattack but unfortunately this didn't happen and we conceded the early goal. After going behind we should have played more aggressively – mainly because we didn't have any choice. We tried but couldn't manage that, and were also unfortunate with a few chances we didn't take. We played well in the second half, causing our opponents problems while creating chances of our own, and we also improved defensively. I identified Bayern's weak points to my players but we couldn't expose them.
Unfortunately we have lost our first match at home, admittedly against very good opponents who will pick up points both home and away. When you take the chances into account a draw would have been a fairer result, but Bayern took advantage of their physical power. I can't make excuses because of missing players, even if the presence of our captain [Mirel] Rădoi would have been a big boost mentally. I hope that we'll get the points we need either to qualify for the next round or the UEFA Cup.
Jürgen Klinsmann, Bayern coach
Obviously we're very satisfied with this away win in our first match in the Champions League this season. We needed to score more goals in the first half as then we could have relaxed but we didn't. I admit that we had a bit of luck in the second half with the two Steaua shots that hit the post, although I was impressed with the way we controlled things in the first half, creating opportunities through playing simply and efficiently. In the second we made a mistake by sitting back as this gave our opponents the space to create chances. One of the reasons for this was increased pressure from Steaua, because they came out from the dressing room motivated and committed, playing a more direct game.
Looking back I'm not satisfied with our performance, but in the end it's the result which matters. In the Champions League you have to play with pace and efficiency, something we did in the first half. [Miroslav] Klose missed a great chance at the start and if he'd scored the match might have been different. However, the players should be proud of how they prepared and played. A win in the opening match is always very important as it gives you a platform for other games, especially as this group is very even.
