Liverpool FC expect to be without Fernando Torres for up to three weeks because of injury, making the striker a major doubt for their UEFA Champions League Group D opener at Olympique de Marseille on 16 September.

Hamstring tear
The forward suffered a hamstring injury in Sunday's goalless Premier League draw at Aston Villa FC, and the full extent of the problem became clear today. "A scan this afternoon confirmed a hamstring tear in Fernando's right leg. He is expected to be out for between two and three weeks," said a club spokesman. In addition to the trip to the Stade Vélodrome – where Torres scored a fine solo goal in Liverpool's 4-0 win last season – the 24-year-old will also miss the league game against Manchester United FC at Anfield on 13 September. Torres, his country's match-winner in the UEFA EURO 2008™ final in June, has been replaced in the Spain squad for the FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Armenia by FC Barcelona's Bojan Krkić.
