Lateral ligament damage
Sneijder suffered the injury in a tangle with an opponent during Sunday's 1-0 friendly loss to Arsenal FC in London and initial reports in Spain suggested the player could be out for six months with "serious ligament damage". Today's examinations, however, revealed injury only to a lateral ligament, with Madrid stating that they expect Sneijder back "in approximately three months". That nonetheless rules the 24-year-old out of his team's opening Primera División and UEFA Champions League fixtures as well as the Netherlands' initial FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
