The Republic of Ireland captain Robbie Keane has become Liverpool FC's latest major signing after arriving on a four-year contract from Tottenham Hotspur FC for a fee rising to €25m.
'Dream move'
Liverpool confirmed that Keane had "finally completed a dream move ... 14 years after turning down the club he grew up supporting". The young Dubliner felt he would have more chance of first-team football at Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, after which he played for Coventry City FC, FC Internazionale Milano and Leeds United AFC before joining Tottenham in 2002. The 28-year-old went on to score 80 Premier League goals in 197 games for the Londoners, collecting his first senior honour in February as Spurs defeated Chelsea FC in the English League Cup final.
'Intelligence'
"We were looking for a player with game intelligence and good movement who could play alongside [Fernando] Torres … and also on the right," Liverpool manager Rafael Benítez said. "He is a player who can give to us a lot of goals. He normally gets about 15 each year." Keane added: "I have come here to win things. I certainly think we can challenge Manchester United [FC] and Chelsea [FC]."
Degen injured
He links up with fellow summer recruits David Ngog, Diego Cavalieri, Philipp Degen and Andrea Dossena at Anfield. Swiss international Degen, meanwhile, has reportedly suffered a recurrence of a groin injury which could rule him out of the start of the Premier League season. The 25-year-old was limited to just ten Bundesliga outings for previous club BV Borussia Dortmund last term because of problems with his groin.
