The German and Spanish sides were teed up for a two-legged meeting on 12/13 and 26/27 August while another high-profile involves FC Twente, led by former England manager Steve McClaren, lined up to face Premier League opponents in the form of Arsenal FC. The 16 winners after the conclusion of the ties will join 16 other sides in the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League group stage. This season's final will be played at Rome's Stadio Olimpico on 27 May 2009.
