Hyypiä happy with capital gains

A 1-1 draw at Arsenal FC represented a fine night's work for Sami Hyypiä, with the Liverpool FC defender concluding: "If we win at Anfield we are through."

'Good thing'
Liverpool eliminated English opponents Chelsea FC en route to the final in 2005 and 2007 thanks to strong second-leg performances at Anfield and the Finnish defender is confident they are now in a position to do the same again against Arsenal. "Of course the away goal we got here is a good thing and the draw, so if we win at Anfield we are through," he said.

Kuyt strike
Dirk Kuyt bundled Steven Gerrard's low cross over the line for Liverpool's equaliser on 26 minutes, shortly after Emmanuel Adebayor had headed Arsenal in front. The speed with which Liverpool hit back was an indication of the character running through Rafael Benítez's side, but Hyypiä believes Arsenal should have been prevented from taking the lead in the first place.

'Disappointing'
"It was disappointing to concede from a corner," he said. "I think I made a little error there. I should have been closer to Adebayor and perhaps pushed him a bit so that he couldn't get a clear header. He has a good jump on him and I didn't expect him to get on to the ball, so it was good to score a few minutes after that. Then it was game on again. Maybe in the second half we were in a little bit of a defensive mode all the time and we couldn't keep the ball to attack more, but Arsenal are a good team and they pushed us back in the second half."

Confident
Having helped his side weather the Arsenal storm, Hyypiä was happy to have held on for the draw. "We knew that there was a second leg coming and that even if they scored a second one, [for us] to score one was a good thing." The two sides meet again in north London on Saturday, and, with that game in mind, the 34-year-old would not let his mind wander to the second leg at Anfield in six days' time. "It's interesting," he said. "But there is one important game before that on Saturday. Both teams want points in the Premier League so let's play that one first then start to think of Tuesday."
