Two-year exntension
Alves, whose latest contract was due to expire in 2010, signed a two-year extension ahead of Wednesday's UEFA Champions League first knockout round visit of FC Schalke 04, where the Portuguese champions will try to overturn a 1-0 defeat in Germany. The 26-year-old central defender said: "I feel that my work and dedication were rewarded. My blood is blue and this renewal is a stimulation for me.
European desire
"I don't feel like I'm an idol. I know that [Porto] supporters like me but I have to do more to be in Porto's history," he added. "We are on the right track in the league but we still haven't won anything and my immediate desire is to go further with Porto in the UEFA Champions League." Capped nine times for Portugal, he has featured in all seven UEFA Champions League matches for Porto this season and has played every minute of the club's 20 league matches.
