PSV with everything to play for

FC Internazionale Milano arrive in the Netherlands with their place as UEFA Champions League Group G winners already assured and for the home team the calculations are almost as simple: PSV Eindhoven must win and hope that Fenerbahçe SK fail to beat PFC CSKA Moskva in Istanbul to join Inter in the knockout rounds.

• At least the Dutch champions, aiming for a fourth successive appearance in the last 16, know their European adventure will continue regardless of the Matchday 6 results. Should they miss out on UEFA Champions League progress, a place in the UEFA Cup Round of 32 was guaranteed with their 1-0 win in Moscow two weeks ago, secured by Jefferson Farfán's first-half goal.

• It was also Farfán who struck the only goal when PSV last played host to an Italian side. They faced AC Milan in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League group stage and it resulted in a fifth successive win at home to Italian visitors. Indeed, they had played Inter's city rivals on two previous occasions and Milan are the only Serie A side to get the better of PSV in the Netherlands, winning 2-1 in the 1992/93 UEFA Champions League group stage.

• The other meeting with Milan brought an end to PSV's best showing in the UEFA Champions League. In the 2004/05 semi-finals they were unlucky to lose out on away goals following a 3-3 aggregate draw, winning the home leg 3-1 after Milan had triumphed 2-0 in the first game.

• Inter's 2-0 win against PSV on Matchday 2, secured by Zlatan Ibrahimović's two first-half goals, one a penalty, made it six games without defeat for Inter against Dutch opponents, with four wins and two draws. However, in the Netherlands, Inter went six games before they sampled success for the first time with a 2-1 win at AFC Ajax in the 2002/03 first group stage, Hernán Crespo scoring twice.

• Ajax and Inter have a shared history that dates back to the 1971/72 European Champion Clubs' Cup final in Rotterdam. The Serie A giants were looking to lift the trophy for the third time following successive triumphs in 1963/64 and 1964/65, but the Dutch team prevailed 2-0 with a pair of Johan Cruyff goals. The teams met again in the first knockout round two years ago with Inter drawing 2-2 in Amsterdam and finishing off the job with a 1-0 home win. Dejan Stanković and Julio Cruz both struck in the Netherlands as the visitors recovered after going 2-0 down.

• A 3-0 home win against Fenerbahçe took the Nerazzurri on to 12 points and assured them of top place in the section. It is the third time in the last four campaigns that they have qualified as group winners.

• Second-half strikes by Julio Cruz, Zlatan Ibrahimović and Luis Antonio Jiménez gave Roberto Mancini's team a fourth straight win following the Matchday 1 loss away to Fenerbahçe. Their other away game resulted in a 2-1 victory over CSKA with Walter Samuel scoring the winner ten minutes from time, his first ever UEFA Champions League goal. Crespo had earlier cancelled out Jô's opener for the Russian side.
