Carragher upbeat for Marseille mission

Jamie Carragher feels Liverpool FC have "got to be confident" after a 4-1 win against FC Porto left them needing a win at Olympique de Marseille to qualify.

Liverpool need to triumph at Stade Vélodrome to guarantee their presence in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League and settle old scores with their Group A rivals. OM won 1-0 at Anfield on Matchday 2 and also knocked Carragher's side out of the 2003/04 UEFA Cup in the fourth round, winning 2-1 in the south of France after a 1-1 draw on Merseyside. Carragher admitted the cliffhanger situation is far from ideal, though he is just relieved that Liverpool will still be masters of their own destiny in a fortnight's time. The defender said: "When we came into the competition we probably wouldn't have liked to be in this position but, after the start we made, we're delighted to be going there with it in our own hands."

'Very difficult'
"We realise it's going to be very difficult. We played there a few years ago in the UEFA Cup and we know the atmosphere. It will be a great game to play in, so hopefully we will get the right result now," continued Carragher. "We've got to have confidence in the players that we have. Marseille have got good players too and they proved that at Anfield. With our experience, and the way we have played over the last few years in Europe, we have got to be confident."

Torres praise
Carragher paid tribute to Fernando Torres, who put Liverpool in front against Porto then restored their lead 12 minutes from the end following an equaliser by Lisandro López, before a Steven Gerrard penalty and Peter Crouch's header completed the home side's victory. "[Torres] is a world-class striker and he's probably up there with anyone now in striking terms. I only have to mark him in training, thankfully," the 29-year-old said.

'Great performance'
"It was a big relief when we got the second goal because when it's 1-1 anything can happen. It was a great goal by Fernando, showing what a top player he is. It was a great performance from him. He's been outstanding all season but he's done it in the Champions League and in a big pressure game like that."
