Werder Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf said it was an "extraordinary night" as his side beat Real Madrid CF 3-2 in Group C to reignite their bid for UEFA Champions League qualification. The result left his opposite number Bernd Schuster bemoaning a "disappointing" display, although the Spanish club remain atop the section.

Thomas Schaaf, Bremen coach
This was an extraordinary night for us. Despite having many injured players my team has risen to the challenge and shown a great performance. It was a great night, we've never changed our goals in the UEFA Champions League and have always believed that we are capable of achieving them, despite our difficult position. Every player has given their all and played to their limit today. Every single one of them has performed the task that was asked of them and played for the good of the team. Scoring so early and again just before half-time gave us the confidence you need to win against Real Madrid. In the second half, Aaron Hunt's goal to make it 3-1 was so important for us. He has been injured for so long and has played a great game today, like all of our players did.

Bernd Schuster, Madrid coach
I believe that we have made it very easy for Bremen in certain regards, especially when you look at the way we defended today, which was really disappointing. Bremen were quick to capitalise on the chances we let them have and used that to their advantage. In general, we did not enjoy enough possession and made lots of mistakes with our final ball. I had warned the team of Bremen's threat even though they had some injured players and I was right. Bremen showed a classic German mentality and gave a display full of endeavour. Regarding qualifying for the round of 16, I am still optimistic. We are still masters of our own fate as we have a match at home on the last matchday. We still want to finish first in the group and there is no need to be worried.
