In contrast, Schalke counterpart Mirko Slomka was left bemoaning the timing of Chelsea's goals after a loss which left the German outfit bottom of the pool.
Avram Grant, Chelsea coach
We can play better but we played good football, positive football. Bit by bit we are on the way to achieving the style of play I want to see. We now have seven points and you can't ask for much more at this stage – we are winning games. I don't want to speak too much about the players individually but Didier is a very positive guy and is doing it out on the pitch.
Mirko Slomka, Schalke coach
I think we could have got more out of the game, but the goals came at bad times. We approached tonight in a positive way with three strikers, but the second goal was a bitter blow for us. After that it was difficult for us to create many chances and Chelsea had the better of us in the second half. However, in both the first and second halves we had chances. [Manuel] Neuer's mistake for the first goal was not helpful, but you also have to look at the whole defence. We've got three points and there's still a chance we could finish second in the group. The loss of Kevin Kuranyi before the game was a blow. We knew he had a problem but we hoped he would be better overnight.
