Ferreira values Istanbul victory

Jesualdo Ferreira said FC Porto's defence was the key to their dramatic victory at Beşiktaş JK as he set his sights on a place in the knockout round.

Ricardo Quaresma's last-gasp goal gave FC Porto a dramatic win at Beşiktaş JK and victorious coach Jesualdo Ferreira already had an eye on the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds having moved three points ahead of third-placed Liverpool FC in Group A. The home team, still without a point, dominated much of the game especially early on and coach Ertuğrul Sağlam apologised afterwards to the home support.

Ertuğrul Sağlam, Beşiktaş coach
Our aim was to win tonight. We are very sad that we lost but my players did their best. I am totally satisfied with their performance – tonight everyone saw a very interesting game but in the Champions League all that matters is the result, not the quality of the match. Tonight we didn't deserve to lose, we dropped three points but learned lessons. I thank all our fans and I also apologise that we made them sad tonight. Everyone says good football wins games but that is not always the case because we played good football but did not win. Even though they didn't deserve three points I congratulate Porto. The combination between our midfield players was impressive tonight and the defenders didn't allow Porto many chances. To be honest our chances of qualifying are very low. We still have four games and we want to get three points [on Matchday 3] against Liverpool. Of course our target was to qualify for the next stage but our aim is to reach the UEFA Cup. Even though we have less chance of qualifying, as we saw tonight anything can happen in football over 90 minutes.

Jesualdo Ferreira, Porto coach
We were expecting a difficult game as Beşiktaş are a strong team. In the first half they pressed and attacked a lot, their midfield was very strong and we couldn't pass through them. The Beşiktaş fans made noise for 90 minutes – that made my players tense and they lost their focus at times. But in the second half we improved and I'd like congratulate all my players especially the defenders. We got three points tonight because of them. Our aim was to get three points, and surprisingly Liverpool dropped three points tonight, so these points are very valuable for us. It's easier for us to qualify for the next stage now, I know that my players don't have enough experience of the Champions League but we still have four more games to play and will gain experience. I would like to warn [Olympique de] Marseille and Liverpool because when they come here they will find it tough because of the fans. Beşiktaş still have a chance of going through.
