Werder Bremen midfielder Diego has extended his contract with the UEFA Champions League contenders for one year until 2011 – and celebrated the announcement by completing the scoring in their 4-1 defeat of Bundesliga champions VfB Stuttgart.
Award
The 22-year-old Brazilian, who arrived from FC Porto in summer 2006, was voted last term's Bundesliga Player of the Season by his fellow professionals in a poll by Kicker magazine. He further proved his worth on Wednesday with an excellent performance in the 2-1 UEFA Champions League defeat at Real Madrid CF.
Long-term commitment
Bremen sporting director Klaus Allofs said: "The contract extension shows what Diego and Werder Bremen think about rumours of a transfer. We have shown with this new contract that we want to work together with him for a long time." Bremen welcome Olympiacos CF in Group C on 3 October.
