Genk unstuck by late Sarajevo strike

FK Sarajevo pulled off one of the most memorable results in their history when they came away from KRC Genk with a 2-1 victory in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League second qualifying round tie.

Memorable victory
Sarajevo's only previous trip to Belgium had resulted in a 6-1 defeat by RSC Anderlect in the 1982/83 UEFA Cup. But they could be on course to win two ties in a European competition for the first time since that season after a dramatic success tonight gave them the advantage ahead of their home return next Wednesday.

Lead short-lived
Last season's Belgian runners-up fell behind in the 14th minute when Genk defender Eric Matoukou intercepted a long pass but touched the ball past goalkeeper Logan Bailly and Admir Raščić pounced to stroke it into the empty net. Sarajevo's lead disappeared 12 minutes later when Miloš Babić handled in the visitors' penalty area and although Hans Cornelis's spot-kick was saved by Muhamed Alaim the Genk defender made no mistake with the follow-up.

Muharemović winner
Although Genk had the better of the play after their equaliser they could not find the end product to match their endeavour and with four minutes left Sarajevo worked a winner. Substitute Almir Turković ran through the home defence and fed Veldin Muharemović, who lifted the ball over Bailly and into the net to make it three wins out of three after Sarajevo's two defeats of Marsaxlokk FC.
