Carroll delight at Rangers switch

Rangers FC have added to their squad before UEFA Champions League qualifying by signing Northern Ireland goalkeeper Roy Carroll on a free transfer.

Rangers FC have added to their squad by signing Northern Ireland goalkeeper Roy Carroll on a one-year contract.

Dream move
The 29-year-old was a free agent after being released by West Ham United FC and the former Manchester United FC and Wigan Athletic FC custodian is delighted to be joining his boyhood heroes. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for me and I had no hesitation in accepting the offer,” said Carroll. “I have made no secret that I am a Rangers fan, so this really is a bit of a dream for me.”

'Great competition'
Manager Walter Smith, who worked with Carroll at Old Trafford during a stint as assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson, welcomed the increased competition for Allan McGregor and Graeme Smith. "I know Roy from my time at Old Trafford and I know his capabilities,” said Smith. “I said that we needed to strengthen the squad and we now have great competition in the goalkeeping department.” Rangers will enter the UEFA Champions League in the second qualifying round and face a tie against either FK Zeta or FBK Kaunas.
