Carvalho joins Ballack on sidelines

Chelsea FC have lost Ricardo Carvalho for Tuesday's return against Liverpool FC in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals after he suffered a knee injury today.

The Portuguese defender limped off in the first half of the 2-2 home draw against Bolton Wanderers FC, a further blow to José Mourinho who has seen his side fall five points behind Premiership leaders Manchester United FC with three league games to play and had Michael Ballack ruled out for an indefinite period after ankle surgery. The extent of the 28-year-old's right-knee injury was quickly apparent with Carvalho leaving Stamford Bridge on crutches. At Anfield, Michael Essien is likely to deputise as Chelsea defend a 1-0 first-leg lead although Khalid Boulahrouz could come in to partner John Terry in central defence.
