Celtic seek icing on the cake

Celtic FC may have already celebrated their first qualification for the knockout stage but they travel to Copenhagen aiming to ice the cake by tying up first place in Group F. Standing in their way are an FC København side seeking to end their first UEFA Champions League campaign on a high note, despite their early elimination from Europe.

• Celtic's 1-0 home victory against Manchester United FC on Matchday 5 exorcised the ghosts of three previous failures at this stage of the competition. Their aim now is to bury another hoodoo and secure a first away win – following ten defeats and one draw on their travels in the group stage.

• Gordon Strachan's team are level on nine points with United but lead the section thanks to their super head-to-head record. They will remain there if they either match or better United's result against SL Benfica.

Nakamura the hero
• Shunsuke Nakamura was the Celtic hero against United, winning the match with a spectacular 81st-minute free-kick. Goalkeeper Artur Boruc also distinguished himself by stopping Louis Saha's last-minute penalty.

• On the same night København's hopes of prolonging their European campaign vanished as they lost 3-1 at SL Benfica. Marcus Allbäck's 89th-minute effort was no consolation for the group stage newcomers who conceded three-first half goals in a defeat that consigns them to fourth place.

• Kenny Miller's 36th-minute penalty gave Celtic a 1-0 success when the sides met in Glasgow on Matchday 2. It was Celtic's first win of a campaign which began with a 3-2 loss at United and subsequently featured a 3-0 home victory and identical away loss against Benfica.

• København's campaign opened with a goalless home draw against Benfica. Matchdays 3 and 4 brought mixed fortunes against United as they followed a 3-0 reverse at Old Trafford with a 1-0 home success.

Know your history
• These teams had not met prior to this season but Celtic did face Boldklubben 1903 - the club whose 1992 merger with Kjøbenhavns Boldklub created the modern-day København. That encounter, in the 1971/72 European Champion Clubs' Cup first round, went the way of Celtic, who lost 2-1 in Copenhagen but triumphed 3-0 in Glasgow.

• Celtic's overall record against Danish clubs is good, with seven wins and a draw from their nine matches.

• The last Celtic team to visit Denmark, for a 1983/84 UEFA Cup first-round tie against AGF Århus, included current first-team coach Tommy Burns. Celtic won 4-1 to complete a 5-1 aggregate success.

• København lost 2-1 at home to Celtic's arch-rivals Rangers FC as they suffered a 3-2 aggregate reverse in the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round. However, they did defeat Aberdeen FC home and away in the 1991/92 UEFA Cup first round.
