Article body
First-half goals from Fernando Morientes and David Villa, and an added-time strike by Silva, gave Valencia CF a 3-0 win over FC Salzburg which put them into the UEFA Champions League group stage on a 3-1 aggregate.
Morientes strikes
Valencia, losing finalists in the competition in 2000 and 2001, wiped out a 1-0 first-leg deficit in the third qualifying round tie when Morientes put them ahead in the 13th minute. The former Liverpool FC and Real Madrid CF striker steered into the empty net when goalkeeper Timo Ochs turned a Villa shot into his path after the Spain forward had raced past the Salzburg back four.
Penalty drama
The hosts were in front on aggregate 20 minutes later after Ezequiel Carboni conceded a penalty for handling in the area when under pressure from Villa. Ochs managed to touch Villa's spot-kick on to a post but the No7 was on hand to smash the ball high into the net on the rebound. With Salzburg needing just one goal to turn the tie, Valencia could never relax but they secured victory when Silva curled a shot around Ochs and into the far corner from the right side of the area with virtually the last kick of the game.
