With 956 points, the FC Barcelona forward comfortably defeated Chelsea FC midfielder Frank Lampard, who finished with 306 points, and team-mate Samuel Eto'o (190 points) to the award, which is based on votes by national-team coaches and captains from around the world. It is the second major prize for the Brazilian in a month after he was crowned European Footballer of the Year in November.

Ronaldinho is only the third player to have won the global title more than once since its inception in 1991. France playmaker Zinedine Zidane took the honours in 1998, 2000 and 2003, while Brazil striker Ronaldo scooped the trophy in 1996, 1997 and 2002. The FIFA Women's Player of the Year accolade went to Birgit Prinz.
