Hernia operation
The 29-year-old Quim will travel to Germany for a hernia operation after being hurt during Saturday's 2-0 victory against CF Estrela da Amadora. The goalkeeper had to be taken off in the 39th minute, with Rui Nereu, 19, coming on to make his Liga debut for the Portuguese champions.
Foreign signing?
With No1 José Moreira ruled out for up to six months following knee surgery, and Quim missing for at least two Liga matches and the UEFA Champions League visit of Villarreal CF, reports in Portugal suggest Benfica will ask for permission to recruit a new custodian. If granted, coach Ronald Koeman is likely to sign a foreign goalkeeper.
Rules
UEFA Champions League rules say of the subject: "If a club cannot count on the services of at least two goalkeepers registered on List A because of long-term injury or illness, the club concerned may temporarily replace the goalkeeper concerned and register a new goalkeeper at any time during the season. The club must provide UEFA with the necessary medical evidence."
