Rooney handed two-match ban

Foul language
The 19-year-old was dismissed after receiving two yellow cards in quick succession in the 64th minute of last Wednesday's game at El Madrigal. After being cautioned by referee Kim Milton Nielsen for a foul, Rooney approached the Danish official and applauded. The referee considered this dissent and also reported in his post-match report that Rooney swore at him as he left the field.

Appeal possible
In statements to UEFA today, United and Rooney admitted the player's reaction in clapping his hands was wrong. However, they contested whether there was subsequent abuse of the referee and said the official may have been confused by the noise of the crowd or other players. United have until midnight on Friday to appeal the decision.

'Several disciplinary offences'
UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body said: "It is beyond any doubt that Wayne Rooney committed several disciplinary offences, notably by taking two yellow cards resulting in a red card, as well as by displaying unsporting conduct... As a result, it is appropriate to impose a two-match ban for the reported misconduct of Wayne Rooney."

Two matches
Rooney will be absent when United are next in Champions League action, next Tuesday night at home to SL Benfica. He will then miss the home game against LOSC Lille Métropole on 18 October.
