Anorthosis one tie from group stage

Anorthosis Famagusta FC's win in Turkey has earned the Cypriot side a third qualifying round tie with Rangers FC.

Trabzonspor tamed
The make-up of ten of the 16 matches was unknown before the last raft of second qualifying round second legs, with former champions Manchester United FC, AFC Ajax and holders Liverpool FC among those to discover their opposition. Rangers FC, who saw city rivals Celtic FC depart to FC Artmedia Bratislava on Tuesday, will play Anorthosis, who made the most of a 3-1 home-leg win against Trabzonspor as they lost only 1-0 in the return in Turkey.

English opposition
Liverpool, who came through against FBK Kaunus on Tuesday, now take on PFC CSKA Sofia, the Bulgarian champions having matched their first-leg 2-0 win against KF Tirana in the home return. Also meeting English opposition will be Debreceni VSC of Hungary, who cruised to a 5-0 win in Croatia against HNK Hajduk Split for an 8-0 aggregate triumph and now play Manchester United FC, much as compatriots Zalaegerszegi TE did three years ago.

Brøndby play Ajax
Ajax, meanwhile, will play Denmark's Brøndby IF, who defeated FC Dinamo Tbilisi 3-1 to add to a 2-0 win in Georgia. Another former European Champion Clubs' Cup-winning team, FC Steaua Bucuresti, are also in the third qualifying round after a 4-1 win against Shelbourne FC - the first leg in Dublin having ended goalless. The Romanian team now meet group stage regulars Rosenborg BK.

Thun oust Dynamo
Artmedia's reward for ousting 1967 European Cup victors Celtic is a meeting with 2003/04 group stage entrants FK Partizan, for whom Obiora Odita scored in a 1-0 win against Moldova's FC Sheriff, just as he did in the first leg in Belgrade. Like Artmedia, Thun are having a good competition debut, having ousted FC Dynamo Kyiv thanks to a dramatic 1-0 win in Berne on Wednesday, following a 2-2 draw in Ukraine.

Anderlecht progress
Malmö FF are Thun's next opponents, the Swedish champions having also struck a last-minute goal, and one they needed, to pip Maccabi Haifa FC 5-4 on aggregate in Israel. RSC Anderlecht's progress was more serene, as although they lost 1-0 in Azerbaijan to PFC Neftchi in their second leg, a 5-0 victory a week ago had already meant they could already look forward to playing SK Slavia Praha.

Rapid against Lokomotiv
Another side who picked up a big first-leg win, SK Rapid Wien, needed two goals in the last nine minutes to defeat F91 Dudelange 3-2 in their home leg, although a 6-1 win in Luxembourg for the Austrian side had made the return academic. FC Lokomotiv Moskva, 2-0 victors against FK Rabotnicki for a 3-1 aggregate triumph, are Rapid's next rivals.

Remaining ties
Already known from the draw were six games between teams given byes to the third qualifying round: Everton FC's meeting with fellow Champions League debutants Villarreal CF, FC Shakhtar Donetsk against FC Internazionale Milano, Sporting Clube de Portugal versus Udinese Calcio, Real Betis Balompié's fixture with AS Monaco FC, Wisla Kraków taking on Panathinaikos FC and FC Basel 1893 meeting Werder Bremen.
