Metatarsal fracture
The 26-year-old defender injured his foot ten days ago against CD Once Caldas in the Peace Cup tournament in the Korean Republic. Further analysis has diagnosed a metatarsal fracture, which could keep him out for 12 weeks - making him doubtful for the first three Champions League group stage matchdays.
Abidal optimistic
Abidal, who could also be unavailable for France's last four FIFA World Cup qualifiers, said: "I hope to recover faster. I had injuries last season and came back OK. I have no worries about that."
Season kick-off
Under new coach Gérard Houllier, Lyon play in the French Super Cup on Wednesday at AJ Auxerre and start their title defence on Sunday at newly-promoted Le Mans UC 72.
