Back home
The 32-year-old former Belgian international has signed a four-year deal with Brugge, where he played between 1993 and 2001 before departing for Schalke. The 18-times capped player is expected to fill the gap left by captain Timmy Simons's transfer to PSV Eindhoven.
High motivation
"Sven cannot wait to get started here," said Brugge technical director Marc Degryse. "He preferred to finish his career at Brugge than extend his stay in Gelsenkirchen. We are counting on him to help fill the gap left by Timmy Simons's departure, in terms of experience and leadership."
European challenge
Vermant's first challenge will be to help Brugge progress from the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League into the group stage. He started his career at KV Mechelen in 1991, and won two Belgian titles and Belgian Cups with Brugge before moving to Schalke, where he lifted the German Cup in 2002.
