'A night to rank with the greatest'

Liverpool FC earned praise in the English press while PSV Eindhoven and Olympique Lyonnais also took great credit.

Fabio Capello asked his players to be patient and prudent before the game but they took him too seriously. We had to wait 64 minutes for Juventus's first shot on goal. Why did Juve not manage to achieve what looked an easy task before the game? Because Benítez announced a 4-4-1-1 formation, only to defend with nine men for the entire match and then because none of Juve's attackers had a good night. (Gazzetta dello Sport, Italy)

Liverpool, with a demonstration of poise and character, did more than take their place in a Champions League semi-final with Chelsea by protecting the 2-1 lead established at Anfield. This was a night to rank with the greatest at a club with a rich store of past glories. It would have been a travesty had Fabio Capello's Juventus advanced on the away-goals rule when, with 12 minutes left, an Alessandro Del Piero free-kick was headed against the post by Fabio Cannavaro. (The Guardian, England)

It was a stirring evening, an exertion of the utmost strength, and towards the end, after the 120 minutes and the drama of penalties, very emotional. PSV goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes was the man who dragged the Eindhoven club through against Olympique Lyon. The Brazilian now faces a meeting with his hero, AC Milan keeper Dida, after his fellow countryman Robert shot PSV into the Champions League semi-finals. It had been a nerve-racking night in Eindhoven, with passion rather than perfection on show in what became a fascinating contest. (Algemeen Dagblad, Netherlands)

It was another 1-1, perfectly balanced, just like in Lyon, and the 120 minutes served as the prelude to a breathtaking penalty shoot-out in which the Eindhoven side finished the job thanks to Gomes. Lyon have been knocked out without losing. PSV, who were crowned European champions the same way in 1988 - drawing their last five matches in that competition - are through without winning. But the tears will have flowed in Lyon's dressing room deep into a desperate night. They couldn't have done much better but there will be no semi-final for Lyon and that is a cruel statistic following their contribution to this breathtaking match. (L'Equipe, France)
