Victorious quartet complete last 16

Group A
Liverpool midfield player Steven Gerrard sent Anfield into raptures with the dramatic late goal that sealed his side's place from Group A at Olympiacos CFP's expense. Rivaldo's first-half free-kick had put the Greek side on course to qualify and left Liverpool needing to win 3-1 to advance in their place. The English side did just that, overcoming the deficit after half-time before Gerrard's thunderous drive on 86 minutes put them ahead of their visitors on head-to-head record. Olympiacos enter the UEFA Cup. Monaco finish top after winning 5-0 at bottom side RC Deportivo La Coruña, last season's semi-finalists eliminated without scoring a goal - a group-stage first.

Group B
Leverkusen claimed top spot in Group B after a comfortable 3-0 home victory against FC Dynamo Kyiv. The Ukrainian side started the night in first place but had to settle for third after Madrid beat AS Roma by the same score in Rome. Dynamo needed only to draw to progress but were beaten by second-half goals from Juan, Andriy Voronin and Marko Babic. Two goals from Luís Figo, one from the penalty spot, followed a strike from Ronaldo and made sure of Madrid's victory in a match played behind closed doors at the Stadio Olimpico.

Group C
Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC became the first team to take a point off Juventus FC when they held the group winners to a 1-1 draw at the Ramat Gan stadium, but it was AFC Ajax who finished third as they drew 2-2 with runners-up FC Bayern München. Michael Ballack's late equaliser pegged Ajax back in an entertaining match at the Amsterdam ArenA, but Alessandro Del Piero's 71st-minute strike in Tel-Aviv ensured a point was enough for the Dutch club to top Maccabi on head-to-head record. Juve's 16 points was the highest tally in the group stage.

Group D
There was only top spot left to play for in Group D and it went to Olympique Lyonnais who overcame fourth-placed AC Sparta Praha 5-0 to finish the section on 13 points. Nilmar was the pick of the Lyon youngsters with two goals, his third and fourth of the group stage. Manchester United FC also fielded a youthful side away to UEFA Cup entrants Fenerbahçe SK, but the ploy backfired as Tuncay Sanli's hat-trick in a 3-0 victory ensured Fener avenged their 6-2 defeat at Old Trafford on Matchday 2 in some style and meant United dropped below Lyon.
