Training setback
The talented 23-year-old midfielder burst into the first team last season, playing a significant part in the club's strong finish to the Bundesliga campaign. However, he was injured in a pre-season friendly against SC Rot-Weiss Essen and needed surgery. Fritz finally returned to training this month but the injury flared up again.
Monday operation
After a medical examination, the German Under-21 international was told he faces a second operation which will take place on Monday. Leverkusen do not expect to be able to call on Fritz's services before the new year, meaning he will not figure in their Champions League group stage campaign.
