Facing charges
The Spanish club's full-back was facing a charge of improper conduct after retaliating to a foul by FC Bayern München's Martin Demichelis in the 59th minute of last week's first knockout round match between the two teams in Munich, which ended in a 1-1 draw. The ban means that Roberto Carlos will miss next week's return leg in Madrid.
TV replay
In accordance with its regulations, UEFA opened an investigation into the incident after TV evidence showed the Brazilian hitting out at Demichelis after being fouled by the Argentinian defender, who received a yellow card. Match referee Terje Hauge booked Demichelis for the challenge, but was unable to see Roberto Carlos's reaction to the foul because his view was impeded by two players.
Foul taken into account
The UEFA disciplinary body ruled that Roberto Carlos had committed an act of assault, which usually carries a three-match ban. However, it took into account the foul committed on the player, and subsequently imposed a two-match suspension.
Appeal deadline
Roberto Carlos, who scored Madrid's equaliser in the match, now has until Thursday at midnight to lodge an appeal against the suspension. Any appeal hearing will take place before the return match.
