Chelsea FC and Olympique Lyonnais triumphed away and RC Deportivo La Coruña and FC Porto at home as the first legs of four more UEFA Champions League first knockout round ties concluded tonight.
Up for grabs
Chelsea won at VfB Stuttgart, Lyon at Real Sociedad de Fútbol and Deportivo edged out last season's beaten finalists Juventus FC at the Riazor. FC Porto defeated Manchester United FC 2-1 in Wednesday's other game meaning all four ties remain up for grabs when they conclude on Tuesday 9 March.
Own goal
Taking their lead from London rivals Arsenal FC, who beat RC Celta de Vigo 3-2 in Spain yesterday, Chelsea now need just a draw to reach the quarter-finals after seeing off Stuttgart. The only goal of the game was scored in the 12th minute when Portuguese international Fernando Meira inadvertently turned a Glen Johnson cross past his own goalkeeper, Timo Hildebrand.
Porto fightback
Despite taking the lead at Porto, Manchester United failed to make it a hat-trick of English victories as they succumbed to two Benni McCarthy goals at the Estádio do Dragão and had Roy Keane sent off. Quinton Fortune struck first in the 14th minute when pouncing on a loose ball spilled by home goalkeeper Vítor Baía. McCarthy ensured parity at half-time with a deft volley before his towering late header sealed the victory.
Fine strike
Like Chelsea, Olympique Lyonnais won thanks to an own goal, Real defender Gabriel Schurrer the offender in the 18th minute. Real almost levelled in the 82nd minute, only for Valeri Karpin's free-kick to rattle back off the bar.
Luque winner
With Real losing tonight and Celta and Real Madrid CF - who drew 1-1 at FC Bayern München - failing to win last night, Depor became the only Spanish side to garner a first-leg lead as they beat Juve 1-0 in Galicia. Alberto Luque scored the only goal, a drilled left-foot volley with eight first-half minutes remaining.
