Tipster: Matchday 1 review

Tipster picks out the star performers after the first week of uefa.com fantasy football.

After every UEFA Champions League Matchday, Tipster will bring you news of which Fantasy Football managers are performing well and why. This week, Tipster looks at last week's Matchday 1 success stories - the players that managers have been picking at this early stage and the selection decisions that have paid off so far.

After the first round of group stage matches, Enrique López-Villa E's Supersayayins are top of the overall manager table with 90 points. An Internazionale FC fan, Enrique cashed in on his team's 3-0 away victory against Arsenal FC. He also made inspired front-line choices - his three forwards Roy Makaay, Alessandro Del Piero and Hakan Sükür all scoring goals in their respective games. Enrique will be receiving a PlayStation 2 console courtesy of Sony.

Toldo tactic
Not surprisingly, the top four teams after Matchday 1 all relied on players from Héctor Cúper's team. In third position, FC Inter Mostar coach Almir Hebibovic used four Inter players. Interestingly, however, while Matchday 1's top four managers all picked goalkeeper Francesco Toldo, none used an Inter forward - perhaps something to remember ahead of any future transfers.

United front
Looking at the general team statistics reveals that managers who based their teams around Manchester United FC, Internazionale FC and S.S. Lazio generally performed well. Miina Kaira, manager of Team Tintte, went as far as to pick an all-United team for Matchday 1, scoring 80 points to take 25th position in the overall table. Whether this strategy continues to bring Team Tintte points, however, will depend on United's future group stage results.

Trapattoni plan
A special mention this week goes to uefa.com manager Giovanni Trapattoni - no, we do not think it is the real one either - whose Italy team are ranked 40th. Trapattoni scored 78 points with a squad composed entirely of Italian players - an original and successful idea Tipster will be keeping track of.

Matchday 2 focus
Tipster will be back at the beginning of next week with ideas for Matchday 2. If, like Tipster, you were caught out by some of last week's results, remember that there are prizes to win every Matchday and that a good score next week could get you to the top of the overall manager table. With about 100,000 teams registered in the competition, that would be something to be proud of. Just remember to make any changes to your team before the deadline on Tuesday 30 September 18.30CET.
