McLeish commits to Rangers

Scottish champions Rangers FC have agreed a new contract with their manager, Alex McLeish.

'Shaken hands'
With his initial deal due to expire next June, Rangers acted quickly to extend the deal. No contract details have been announced, but Rangers chairman John McClelland said: "We have shaken hands with Alex on the terms of his contract."

Domestic treble
McLeish has enjoyed remarkable success at Ibrox since leaving Hibernians FC to replace Dick Advocaat in December 2001. After claiming a cup double in his first six months at the club, he led the club to the domestic treble last season - wresting the title from arch-rivals Celtic FC for the first time in three seasons.

Straitened circumstances
McLeish - a distinguished player in his day for Aberdeen FC and Scotland - has achieved the success despite Rangers' increasingly straitened circumstances. Despite selling Lorenzo Amoruso, Barry Ferguson and Neil McCann for a combined sum of €15.8m this summer and spending just €930,000 on incoming players, Rangers reached the group stage of the Champions League with victory over FC København.
