Article body
Sudden-death victory
The champions of Serbia and Montenegro wiped out Newcastle's advantage from their 1-0 first-leg victory, thanks to a second-half goal from striker Ivica Iliev, and then completed the comeback with a 4-3 sudden-death victory on penalties.
Lightning-quick break
Iliev put Partizan ahead on the night in the 50th minute, rounding off a lightning-quick break out of defence following a Newcastle corner by slotting a pass from impressive captain Sasa Ilic into the net.
Shearer miss
In the first five penalties of the shoot-out, three players from each side, including Newcastle's former England captain Alan Shearer, failed to convert. When Newcastle's Aaron Hughes blasted his effort over, Partizan right-back Milivoje Cirkovic then put away the decisive kick to see his side through to Thursday's draw and leave Newcastle with the consolation prize of a place in the UEFA Cup.
