Article body
Late penalties
However, two late penalties from German-born Cypriot international striker Rainer Rauffmann gave the visitors hope of turning the tie round in next Wednesday's return in Nicosia - despite having trailed by five goals at one stage.
Perfect start
It was 3-0 to the Polish champions at the break, their perfect start secured by Maciej Zurawski with an eleventh-minute goal. Tomasz Frankowski scored the second eight minutes later and Marcin Baszczynski increased the lead on the stroke of half-time.
Lead increased
Zurawski began the second half as he did the first with an early goal - this time four minutes in - and Daniel Dubicki made it five in the 70th minute to further delight the home supporters.
Rauffmann takes advantage
However, the prolific 36-year-old Rauffmann took advantage of spot-kick chances on 74 and 85 minutes to give Omonia hope of earning a third qualifying round tie against either RSC Anderlecht or AFC Rapid Bucuresti, who drew 0-0 tonight.
