Article body
Real Madrid CF have announced the appointment of Carlos Queiroz as their new coach and he will be presented to the media at a press conference at the Santiago Bernabéu at 18.30CET.
Del Bosque departure
Madrid confirmed their interest in the 50-year-old Queiroz yesterday, 24 hours after the Spanish champions had announced their decision not to offer previous incumbent Vicente del Bosque a new contract. He has agreed a two-year contract worth around €2m a season and will work with an assistant to be appointed by the club.
Back with Beckham
The deal will reunite Queiroz with the other man to swap Manchester for Madrid this summer, David Beckham. A statement on the English champions' website thanked Queiroz, a former Portugal coach, for "his contribution to Manchester United's success last season". He was hailed as a major factor behind United's defensive transformation last term and Madrid will be hoping he can do a similar job at the Bernabéu as the club look to reclaim the UEFA Champions League crown that now rests with AC Milan.
No hurry for Ferguson
Meanwhile, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has said he is in no hurry to find a successor for Queiroz. "We won't be in a rush to appoint a new coach," he said. "I have been very satisfied with the job that [coaching staff member] Mike Phelan has been doing. This is a wonderful opportunity for him [Queiroz], too big a chance to turn down."
