Austria aim high with Löw

FK Austria Wien have turned to another German to replace Christoph Daum as coach, appointing Joachim Löw.

Austrian double winners FK Austria Wien have turned to another German to replace the departed Christoph Daum, appointing the former FC Tirol Innsbruck coach Joachim Löw.

Title triumph
Löw, 43, guided Tirol to the title in 2002 in a campaign plagued by massive financial problems, but he was forced to leave when the club finally failed to avoid bankruptcy some weeks later. He replaces Daum, who last season guided the club to their first domestic double in eleven years, but is now bound for Turkey and the job of Fenerbahçe SK coach.

Success at Stuttgart
At ambitious Austria - who will play in next season's UEFA Champions League third qualifying round - he will team up again with former Tirol players Radoslav Gilewicz, Jürgen Panis and Marc Ziegler. Löw made his name with German side VfB Stuttgart where, after succeeding Rolf Fringer in 1996, he led the side to fourth place in the Bundesliga and victory in the 1997 German Cup.

Career moves
After guiding Stuttgart to the final of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup against Chelsea FC the following season, Löw was surprisingly sacked. He moved on to jobs at Fenerbahçe, Karlsruher SC and Adanaspor AS before replacing Kurt Jara at Tirol in October 2001.
